Afterward, we’ll begin our scenic drive back to Ashgabat, retracing our route through the rugged landscapes, gradually returning to the modernity of Turkmenistan’s capital.

  • In the afternoon, we set off on an unforgettable journey into the heart of the Karakum Desert, heading toward the awe-inspiring Darwaza Gas Crater, also known as the "Door to Hell." On the way, we’ll stop to explore water and mud craters, unique natural phenomena that hint at the volatile geological activity beneath the desert sands.

  • Arriving at Darwaza as the sun begins to set, you’ll be greeted by the mesmerizing sight of the fiery crater against the vast desert backdrop. We’ll spend the night in traditional yurts, experiencing the simplicity and tranquillity of nomadic life. Day 6 - Journey to Kunya Urgench (UNESCO)

  • We embark on a thrilling drive to the ancient city of Kunya Urgench, a UNESCO World Heritage Site that offers a glimpse into the once-great capital of the Khorezm Empire. Steeped in history, this site is home to some of the most well-preserved monuments in Central Asia, including towering minarets, mausoleums, and ruins that evoke the grandeur of a bygone era. As we explore these relics of the past, you'll discover the legacy of a city that once rivaled the greatest cultural and scientific centers of the Islamic world.
  • Wander through the Mausoleum of Sultan Tekesh, an architectural marvel with its impressive turquoise dome, and stand in awe before the Kutlug Timur Minaret, which reaches up 60 meters, making it one of the tallest ancient minarets in the region. As you traverse the ancient pathways, you'll feel the weight of history under your feet, imagining the bustling life that once flourished in this sacred place.
  • After a day of exploration, we drive to Dashoguz, a city rich in history and culture. From here, we’ll take an evening flight back to Ashgabat, giving you time to reflect on the profound historical and cultural experiences of the day.

Day 7 - Journey to Mary & Ancient Merv (UNESCO)

  • We begin the day with an exciting morning drive to Mary, a vibrant city that serves as the gateway to one of the most significant archaeological sites in Central Asia. Our destination is Ancient Merv, a UNESCO World Heritage Site that was once a pivotal stop on the Silk Road and one of the world's largest cities in its prime. Known as the "Pearl of the East," Merv played a key role in the cultural and economic exchanges between civilizations for centuries.

  • At Ancient Merv, you’ll discover landmarks such as the Sultan Sanjar Mausoleum, Gyz Kala fortress, and Erk Kala, all surrounded by the desert's quiet vastness. Day 8 - Discovery of Gonur Depe Bronze Age Site & Return to Ashgabat

  • In the morning, we embark on an extraordinary drive to Gonur Depe, the heart of the ancient Bronze Age civilization that predates even Ancient Merv. This archaeological site is one of Turkmenistan’s most important, revealing the ruins of a vast, sophisticated settlement that thrived more than 4,000 years ago. The excavations at Gonur Depe have uncovered palaces, temples, and impressive fortifications, shedding light on one of the most mysterious civilizations of the ancient world.

  • After a day exploring this awe-inspiring site, we return to Mary by 16:00, giving us time to visit the History Museum of the Merv Region. Here, you’ll delve deeper into the region’s heritage with exhibits on the various civilizations that have called this area home over the millennia, from the Bronze Age to modern times.
  • Later, we head to Mary Airport for our evening flight back to Ashgabat (ETD 19:20h, ETA 20:00h).
