At KTG, we have been specialising in arranging tours to the DPRK since 2008. North Korea's unique political system and its sense of being in a world of its own initially captivated our attention—and these same qualities drew us to Turkmenistan. With its wide boulevards, magnificent white marble and golden monuments, grand buildings, and deluxe hotels, all seemingly devoid of people, this country leaves a profound impact on even the most seasoned travellers.
We offer a variety of tours in Turkmenistan. You can see some sample programs and prices below ranging from 2 to 9 days, but if you have a particular itinerary in mind, including a longer stay, please let us know and we will immediately give you a quote.
Below is an introduction of the country too.
We first encountered Turkmenistan’s mystique at the 2010 Shanghai World Expo. While hundreds of Chinese visitors queued to visit North Korea’s stand—where vibrant propaganda posters, stamps, and postcards were eagerly offered by middle-aged North Korean ladies in immaculate traditional attire—the Turkmenistan pavilion presented a contrasting scene. Almost empty, it served as a quiet refuge from the throngs eager to discover what the rest of the world had to offer. The green and white stand, staffed by two stern-looking male representatives, showcased images of a gleaming white marble city. "In our capital, Ashgabat, we have a bank" one of the leaflets read.
We did more research on this country. Grandiose monuments to its founding President, quirky rules such as only white, gold and silver cars being allowed in its capital and even months named after the founding President's mother and his book... But there is so much more to discover in this fascinating, secluded Central Asian nation. From its rich historical legacy and Silk Road heritage to its natural wonders, breathtaking landscapes of vast deserts and canyons, and vibrant cultural traditions—this country offers a truly unique journey for the curious traveler.
Often referred to as the "City of White Marble," Ashgabat boasts a dazzling array of monumental buildings clad in gleaming white marble and adorned with gold accents. The city's pristine streets and immaculate gardens create a surreal atmosphere that is both impressive and slightly otherworldly.
As you travel through Ashgabat, you'll immediately notice the country's penchant for grandeur and ostentation. From the gleaming bronze and golden statues of its leaders to the opulent marble buildings that line the streets of Ashgabat, Turkmenistan's architectural wonders are a testament to its unique identity. Several World Guinness Records such as the highest concentration of white marble-clad buildings in the world, most public fountains or largest indoor Ferris Wheel, amongst many, many others, shape the capital's urban landscape.
Marvel at the Darvaza Gas Crater, also known as the "Door to Hell." This astonishing sight features a burning natural gas field that has been ablaze since the 1970s, creating an otherworldly spectacle that is truly unforgettable.
The awe-inspiring Karakum Desert. This expansive wilderness covers over 70% of the country and is home to a diverse array of flora and fauna. Embark on a thrilling 4x4 adventure across the desert's rolling dunes.
For those seeking a more immersive cultural experience, our Turkmenistan tours include visits to traditional villages and nomadic settlements. Engage with the warm and welcoming local people, learning about their unique customs and way of life. Witness the intricate process of carpet weaving, a revered art form in Turkmenistan, and savor the flavors of authentic Central Asian cuisine.
Whether exploring the vibrant Tolkuchka Bazaar in Ashgabat, with its colorful stalls of textiles, souvenirs, and local delicacies, or attending cultural festivals like Nowruz, you'll be struck by the warmth and hospitality of Turkmen locals, despite the country's isolated nature.
Delve deeper into Turkmenistan's rich history with a visit to the ancient ruins of Nisa, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This former Parthian capital dates back to the 3rd century BC.
Head north to Old Urgench, bordering Uzbekistan, which offers a glimpse into the rich history of the Khorezm Empire, with its ancient mausoleums and towering minarets standing as timeless reminders of the region's past significance along the Silk Road.
This UNESCO World Heritage Site was once a major center of Islamic learning and a key stop along the legendary Silk Road. As you explore the ruins of this once-thriving metropolis, our knowledgeable guides will regale you with tales of its rich history and the civilizations that once called it home.
