The Tongmyong Hotel is located just a few meters away from the Songdowon Hotel. Travellers usually stay at either of these hotels when going to Wonsan city, on the east coast.
The hotel is right by Jangdok islet where you can see locals enjoying sea food barbecue. You can also walk to the Jangdok islet where you can enjoy great views of the city.
The hotel is centrally located in Wonsan city, just by the seafront, overlooking the East Sea of Korea, with great views of Jangdok islet.

As you may have read on our site, not that many tourists head to the east coast of Korea as it requires at least two days in total given that the drive there from Pyongyang takes around 4 hours each way. The drive here is very interesting as you literally drive across the DPRK, seeing a variety of sceneries; from small towns to beautiful landscapes as Koreans look at us in amazement.
Rooms facing the sea have great views of it. Conditions are basic, quite standard for provincial hotel in the DPRK. Mattresses are a bit thin too.

If you decide to upgrade to a first class room, you will have a very spacious room with your own office.
First class rooms are spacious and have their own office.
The Hotel is smaller than the Songdowon Hotel, but also has a 1970s feel to it; amber glass windows, beige curtains combined with dark brown wood and a lot of marble.

A lot of marble at the Dongmyong Hotel
You can see them early in the morning from the hotel room, do ask for rooms with sea views.
Local fisherman in Wonsan
Getting up early to check out the sunrise is definitely worth it, so don’t forget to set your alarm clock!
Views of the Wonsan City from the Jangdok Islet
They have an interesting souvenir shop in the lobby. Like with any hotels in Wonsan or Hamhung, please make sure that you take small change if staying at the Dongmyong Hotel. It is a pity not to be able to buy a fascinating, random DPRK book, or to have to pay a lot for it, because of not having any change. Remember that foreign coins are accepted in North Korea.
They have a great sauna and pool in the bottom floor. Do check these out. The lobby has a bar and there is too a restaurant where they serve drinks on the top floor. There is a table tennis room on the 4th floor, but be warned, many Koreans play the game very, very well! As for food, there is a great fish restaurant just across the hotel where we usually arrange lunch.
If staying in downtown Wonsan you will either stay at the Tongmyong Hotel or at the Songdowon Hotel which is close-by.
Do not expect luxury when in either of them. Be ready for power-cuts and even the chance of their not being hot water, though they do schedule for it to be available when guests are in the hotel.
Take advantage of the great location of the Tongmyong Hotel. If on a private trip do make sure that you go for a walk to the local docks, main square and to the beach. If joining one of our group tours, this will be arranged by us.
Picture on the right - Man fishing in Wonsan. You can see the Jangdok islet in the background. As is the case with the Songdowon Hotel, the Tongmyong Hotel is centrally located.
